BUS SHELTER

Metal, plastic, screens

2017

A bus stop is any place where a bus stops to pick up and deliver passengers. A bus shelter,  in the other hand, provides passengers waiting for the bus a protective  environment that might also include additional features.

A need  for protection and entertainment is perceived among students using the  university's transportation system at the Savannah College of Art and  Design. Thus, a bus shelter with an unconventional design that protects  SCAD’s community from the elements while they are in transit is ideated.

Commuting  can become more enjoyable with the help of seating areas, shade,  shelter and more. These spaces facilitate an environment that becomes a center of interaction.

Bus shelters from around the world were analyzed to identify opportunity gaps in the market.

For this  project it was decided to tackle an opportunity gap that calls for an  equally large amount of both amenities and technology.

The  final design for the bus shelter is conceived as a modular structure  made up of aluminum elbows manufactured through extrusion and joined to  aluminum honeycomb composite panels through tongue and groove joints  secured with adhesive.

It  responds to size regulations and is intended to be 18 feet long, 4 feet  8 inches wide and 8 feet 2 inches tall. However, thanks to its modular  nature, it can be expanded or contracted according to the available  sidewalk space. It also responds to the needs of the specific location  adding more roofed or seating area.

Its  digital display can include anything from maps, local events or  information, arcade-like games and advertisement that pays for the  maintenance of the shelter.
